Chickens and Cat Allergies

‼️Did you know Wednesday‼️
❓Did you know that chicken eggs might be the solution for us animal lovers with an allergy to cats?
🐣When chickens lay eggs they contain several complex nutrients to aid in chicks development. One of these components is called immunologically active immunoglobulin Y (IgY) which is a protein used by the immune system to recognize potentially harmful antigens and neutralize the potential threat.
🐱The major cat allergen is a protein found in cats saliva called Fel d 1. This allergen is transferred to their fur, and subsequently into the air and onto surfaces, when cats groom themselves.
🤧When chickens are exposed to Fel d 1, they produce something called anti-Fel d 1- specific IgY (AFD1) which as an antibody that specifically targets Fel d 1. This antibody is subsequently passed onto their eggs. When these eggs are fed to cats, they neutralize the Fel d 1 protein, which prevents the protein from binding to human antibodies and causing an allergic reaction.
🤯Its a complicated process for sure but in summary, chickens exposed to cat allergens produce a protein that can be passed to their eggs and then to cats and prevent a major cat allergen from causing allergic reactions.
